Nous devons la chanson Nightcall à Kavinsky, pseudonyme de Vincent Belorgey, artiste français de musique électronique. Ce titre figure sur son premier album OutRun sorti en 2010. Pour produire Nightcall, Kavinsky a notamment fait appel à Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, une des moitiés de Daft Punk.
London Grammar reprend en 2013 Nightcall pour leur premier album If You Wait. Le groupe, que l’on connaît notamment pour le tube Wasting My Young Years, métamorphose la chanson en délaissant son aspect électronique pour une interprétation au piano toute en délicatesse. Ils permettront à cette chanson de s’exporter et de connaître le succès dans d’autres pays.
Le choix de cette reprise s’est fait à l’improviste en studio, et a été enregistré en une seule prise, comme l’expliquent les membres du groupe Dan Rothman et Dot Major.
« We sort of did it by accident. We were in the studio and thinking of doing a cover for our EP and our producer came out and was like, ‘Let’s do ‘Nightcall’.’ We love the song and knew it quite well. »
« It’s completely live. Obviously the beat’s been added at the end, but the piano, vocal and guitar was just one live take. »
